The nights are drawing in and the landscape is changing colour. Winter is approaching!
For many people, this is a time of negativity: memories of previous winters full of illness and misery.
But it shouldn’t be this way. We don’t need to fear the winter season – we should be prepared for it!
Doctors surgeries all over the country have posted the usual ‘flu jab’ signs and pharmaceutical companies are already rubbing their hands with the knowledge that profits will soon be soaring once again with the sale of their prescription and over-the-counter drugs.
We have all heard the saying ‘Prevention is better than cure’. It’s not just a ‘sensible’ belief, but could be the difference of life and death for many people. And the ‘cure’ in most cases of winter disease really means a treatment of symptoms, which is very different than a cure!
How many times have you dreaded being ill over the Christmas and New Year period or wondered who won’t make this year’s festivities because of illness?
Here is a basic winter health checklist. It’ll help you take action and enjoy this beautiful time of year:
1 – Get fitter
Obvious I know, but the healthier and fitter you are entering winter, the better your body will be able to deal with any nasty bugs floating around in the office or public places.
But don’t overdo it.
Now is NOT the time to embark on the latest fad exercise regime of ‘X-fit or boot camp your body to exhaustion’ routine. Your exercise programme should be specific for you and your biomechanical requirements, not based on a body building routine!
2 – Fortify your in-built immune defence system
Your immune system is your first and last line of defence. It has to tackle a countless barrage of invaders on a daily basis. So if you neglect to strengthen this vital part of your health, you’ll pay the price in a reduction of security.
If you didn’t have a virus defence system for your computer, how long would your computer stay healthy? It’s the same for your internal defence system, but on a MUCH larger scale.
One easy preparation for maintaining a health defence system is with a ‘winter treatment’ from Mike, our Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioner. Not only will it add a huge boost to your immune system, but it also has a very relaxing and warming effect!
3 – Get back to primal winter living
No, I don’t mean going out there and finding a nice dry cave. With the changing of the seasons comes a change in our own hormonal system. We are all aware of the 24-hour cycle – work in the day/ sleep at night.
Well, the seasons simply go that next step in the UK. Winter signifies a time in the year where sleep should be naturally ramped up: less work, more sleep.
This allows us to increase our rest over the winter months, so we are refreshed and ready to chase down our prey in the spring (don’t try this in Tesco though). We are designed to rest more in the darker months.
What’s more, in many cultures it’s tradition to throw a mid-winter party to enjoy the festive season and welcome the downhill ride to spring!
