After many years of trying my best to keep fit, which involved, running, cycling, gym work and swimming, I decided on the recommendation of my wife to try a series of 121’s with Gavin and 10 years* later am still going to The Centre for Whole Health!.
The most important benefits of The Centre for Whole Health is the opportunity to tailor your training to suit whatever you have planned, be it a skiing holiday, general fitness or recovery from a niggle or injury.
It takes away the drudgery of ‘doing the same thing’ allows you to develop for upcoming events/sport/holidays and as you get older you can make sure that your training is tailored appropriately.
“I originally visited the Centre in 2010 for treatment of a hamstring injury caused through running. With the help of Gavin, Paula and the rest of the team, I successfully recovered from the injury and completed my aim of running the London Marathon in 2011.
Because the training and advice has been so useful, I have continued visiting the Centre ever since, and my overall strength, posture and endurance has improved significantly*. I would highly recommend the Centre to anyone looking to improve their overall fitness and well-being.
I had a brain injury on 16/12/2000, was in hospital 6 month. When I was discharged from hospital I had help from the ABI team (Acquired brain Injury) who was a multi discipline team – Physiotherapy, O.T. and Speech and language therapy. First day home I couldn’t walk, talk, feed myself, dress myself or wash and care for myself. My Mum is a Nurse which was handy!!
After years of treatment and help from the ABI they told my mum they had done all they could for me and discharged me from their caseload. I had lots of support from friends and family and my parent’s thought it would help me if I went to see a personal trainer, for my posture and gait. My mum found Gavin on a website. He was based in Eccleston at the time.
When I started seeing Gavin I could walk but slowly and leaning forward. My right shoe had to be raised 15mm because I had a limp and the NHS Physio advised my Mum to have my shoe raised. I had a problem with my balance, couldn’t walk in a straight line and my right arm was contracted like someone who has had a stroke.
My speech had improved a lot but people still had difficulty understanding me. I relied on my mum a lot and thought I would have to live with her for ever because I was so dependent on her. Gavin and his team have helped me so much, advising and encouraging me, giving me advice on Diet, Exercise, and planning for the future, setting realistic goals. I get fed up with my situation sometimes but Gavin and his team help keep me motivated and positive, to look forward and plan for the future.
I now live on my own and I’m more independent doing my own Shopping, Cooking, Cleaning and caring for myself. I still have lots of support from my Mum but don’t depend on her as much, as Gavin has helped me to increase my independence. I would advise anyone in a similar situation to me to get in touch with Gavin for an assessment and help.
I would also advise carers and family and friends of people who are in a similar situation to make an appointment because I know if it had been up to me, at the time, I wouldn’t have known to ring Gavin, I was too ill. A big thank you to all at The Centre for Whole Health.”
A very painful knee, diabetes raging out of control, high blood pressure plus an innate distrust of the medical profession had brought me to the absolute depths of despair.
I literally didn’t know what to do next. Then I remembered a former colleague seeing somebody in Mawdesley about her excruciating back pain.
An internet search led me to The Centre for Whole Health. An e-mail and phone call later I was booked in to see Gavin.
To say I was terrified about seeing Gavin for the initial assessment is an understatement. However, I accomplished that and saw the chiropractor (another new experience) and was immediately reassured that I wasn’t a lost cause.
Now I follow a gluten free diet suited to my metabolic type and feel much, much better.
The exercises I do on a 1-1 basis with Gavin and Nick have improved my balance and posture, strengthened my knee and make me feel less of an old lady!* Regular massages and use of the infra-red sauna have added to my sense of well-being.
Now I feel in greater control of my health and my GP, whose support I’ve had since day one, is delighted that my blood pressure and diabetes are much improved. The whole aura of professionalism, care and friendliness that pervades the centre encourages me, a person to whom exercise is an anathema, to continue

“Following recommendations I initially visited the ‘Centre for Whole Health’ around 2006 as I was experiencing symptoms which I had associated with food. I met Gavin and we talked about my nutrition. With Gavin’s assistance, it was found that I had Gluten and diary intolerances.
In 2007/8 I had an accident at work. After the accident I was suffering from numbness, tingling, temporary loss of use of my right arm, my left leg, occasionally my right leg; spasms, headaches, migraines and full back pain. The NHS failed to help me, only recommending exercises that I had already been doing along. I returned to the Centre and spent 12 months* with an exercise coach and the onsite chiropractor, in which I learnt to strengthen muscles and control the onset of pain and stop it.
I was impressed and pleased with the service and professional attitude of the small team there at the time. During the following treatment I continued visiting the onsite chiropractor every 6 months and regularly did my basic exercises, which allowed me to return to some of my pervious sports.
Whilst overseas In 2011 I woke one morning with immense lower back pain, spasms, numbness and weakness in both legs and other symptoms. I followed my exercise routine for this every few hours, which reduced but did not resolve the pain. Over the next 18 months I visited a physiotherapist and chiropractor in that country. When I returned to the UK I had 2 MRI scans, visited a NHS and a private physiotherapist, a spinal rehabilitation specialist, a neurologist and a chiropractor. I made no improvements and I was suffering with more intense and frequent problems.
Again I returned to the centre. Through continued hard work and dedication, along with their knowledge and guidance, 10months down the line I am now training for a super sprint triathlon for June 2014! I am extremely glad of Gavin and Gabi’s success in being able to expand over the years. They still create a caring, dedicated and professional team whom have worked hard with me to overcome my problems and guide me in the right direction during my recoveries. Over the years they have always been the ones who could help.
They don’t make any promises other than to try their best, providing you’re willing to do so as well; and they have lived up to that. I have recommended their services to others and will continue to do so. I cannot praise them enough for helping me through some difficult times in my life. I tell people that if you are willing to listen and do your bit, then these people know what they are talking about and will work hard to improve your quality of life.”
“In August 2012 following a repeated history of chronic shoulder, back and neck pain for just short of three years I approached Gavin regarding the management and treatment of my condition. Previous tto the injury I had been a full time YTS footballer with a football league club and at the time of my injury in 2010 I was a contracted semi-professional player at one of the biggest non league clubs in the country. Unfortunately at the age of 25 I found myself in a position were injuries had taken its toll on my body and after playing only a handful of games in my final two seasons I retired in late 2011 following countless failed attempts with a number of treatment plans used by physio’s, specialists, and alternative therapists whilst undertaking rehabilitation programmes all over the country to overcome the physical limitations football left me in.
After having an initial chat with Gavin he re-assured me that my pain was manageable and could be rectified and advised me that a thorough evaluation was necessary to determine the causes. By doing this he was able to specifically tailor an exercise programme to improve my flexibility, stability, muscle balance, core strength and also the re-activation of weakened inactive muscles as a result of my issues.
In addition to this Gavin recommended I visited the Chiropractor based at the centre to re-align my skeletal system and by using a combination of all the coaching and recommend therapies I had a very positive response.
Using the fantastic facilities at the centre I did the majority of my training and treatment sessions under the supervision of Paula Carse. Paula worked alongside Gavin and the two of them together planned and varied the specific exercise programmes combining them with regular checkups and re-evaluations. The results spoke volumes, prior to starting at the centre the position I found myself in was untenable. I had barely worked after retiring from football the previous year, I was unable to sit for longer than a few minutes at a time, struggled walking any real distances, and found it hard to do day to day tasks such as house work, and spent the majority of my days laid flat on my living room floor trapped and scared of the pain that had taken over my life. Eighteen months on I am now a partner in the family farming business, doing a large amount of physical work on a daily basis, and I’m also back doing the things that I love doing, I mountain bike, walk, travel the world and amazingly I have even made a comeback on the football field.
In addition to the physical problems I was experiencing, I also suffered from continuous exhaustion, poor mental well being and a number of internal intestinal issues. A thorough Health Appraisal questionnaire helped to access where and why I was experiencing problems with these and Gavin suggested that we look at what could possibly be the cause by doing a metabolic assessment. By completely altering my diet and eating the right types of foods for my metabolic type, I followed an eating plan Gavin put together and this allowed my energy levels to be revitalised and helped me cope with the reinforced work load my body was under from all the extra training and the massive change in my lifestyle. By fine tuning my diet and daily requirements I no longer suffered from stomach pains, intestinal issues and found that by making many changes and the correct choices I also had big improvement in my general well being.
Although I still have some physical issues regarding my body and pain, the tools I have learnt throughout my time at the centre through the management, the conditioning and the detailed education I have maximised my energy, my well being and I’m living life to its maximum potential and for this I will be forever grateful.
I had recently turned 60, was the heaviest weight I had ever been, various aches and pains were niggling me and I was feeling that I was getting old!! A leaflet through the door about the services offfered by the Centre looked like a possible lifeline and with some trepidation I rang to make an appointment –not easy when you looked like I did and you worried about being totally out of place –too old, too fat, too out of condition – I could tick all those boxes! To say it has been one of the best decisions I have ever made is not overstating the change it has brought to my life.
Yes , I’m old enough to be the mother -or even grandmother – of some of the staff and other clients but that has never made any difference to the friendly and professional way I have always been treated.
What do I get out of the services?
1) The fact that I work with a dedicated exercise coach who knows me better than I know myself and who devises appropriate and progressive exercise programmes for me which are constantly monitored and reviewed and which enable me to make progress that I can see.
2) One of the main aims I had when I started was to be an active and healthy grandmother to my grandson who is now a very lively 6 year old. The ultimate success of this aim was probably achieved a few weeks ago, when after staying with us for an active weekend he went home to his mother and declared he was really tired as “grandma never stops”!
3) I also wanted to improve my overall health, reduce weight and feel better about myself. I can now tick all those boxes too as I have benefited greatly from a totally holistic approach that has been really beneficial to both my physical and overall well-being.
What would I say to anyone thinking about joining?
